Oscillations of calcium ion concentrations in Physarum polycephalum
Aequorin is a photoprotein which emits light in response to changes in free calcium concentration. When aequorin was microinjected into plasmodia of Physarum polycephalum, light emission varied in synchrony with the motile oscillations of the organisms. Therefore, movement is correlated which changes in the concentration of free calcium.
متن کاملRelation of cytoplasmic calcium to contractility in Physarum polycephalum.
In a dumbbell-shaped plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum showing active shuttle streaming Ca was precipitated with potassium pyroantimonate (K[Sb(OH)6]), and the distribution of Ca between the cytoplasm and cellular organelles, especially vacuoles, was examined by electron microscopy. The contracting half-mass, where many empty vacuoles were present, was rich in the small Ca precipitates locate...
متن کاملCalcium and malate are sporulation-promoting factors of Physarum polycephalum.
Fruiting body formation (sporulation) is a distinctive, irreversible differentiation process in the life cycle of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum. The most important requirement for sporulation of Physarum is a period of starvation, and normally sporulation proceeds in the light. It is shown here that by omitting the liquid sporulation medium and elevating the temperature from 21 to 25 deg...
متن کاملLogical Modelling of Physarum Polycephalum
In the paper we proposed a novel model of unconventional computing where a structural part of computation is presented by dynamics of Plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum, a large single cell. We sketch a new logical approach combining conventional logic with process calculus to demonstrate how to employ formal methods in design of unconventional computing media presented by Physarum polycephalu...
متن کاملPhysarum polycephalum Histones
Physarumpolycephalum is an acellular slime mould whose histones are of general interest because they allow comparisons to be made between lower eukaryote and higher eukaryote histones and, perhaps more importantly, they provide a unique opportunity for the study of histone changes in the mitotic cycle, which is naturally synchronous in P. polycephalum plasmodia, and during differentiation. Stud...
